" Gospel is not a genre of music I listen to on a regular basis but recently, I received a CD from Lisa Reedy Promotions and Holy Mountain Music and decided to give it a listen. Songs From Sunday Morning Vol 1 is the first in-house release from Holy Mountain Music, a production and publishing group founded by arranger/producer Bobby Bush. This first offering contains new versions of gospel standards and classic hymns.
The music is jazzy and funky, but not overly so. What you do hear is a groove that is undeniable and one that provides a positive message. Guitarist Rick Bowlby is a highlight throughout the album. I wouldn't mind hearing a full album of his guitar work. As for the material, the titles are familiar but you haven't heard them like this! The arrangements are very well done, with an excellent mix of acoustic, orchestral and electric instruments.
Every track is uplifting and different than the last. Despite the Christian themes, one does not have to be a Christian to enjoy the music presented within this CD. It is very interesting when the jazz and gospel worlds collide, such as on this album. if you';re a fan of great gospel music and jazz, you'll find it here!
